Natural Awakenings Hudson County NJ

Farmers’ Markets

Warm weather is here, and after weeks of staying home, we all want to get out for a little bit of sun and fresh air. Luckily, farmers’ market season is officially here, so we can get some fresh produce along with the air and sunshine.

Many Hudson County markets have already announced opening dates and times, and many more will soon follow, including guidelines for dealing with COVID-19. From the face mask rule to ordering and pick-up procedures, we’ll all need to be more mindful, but fresh veggies are worth a little bit of extra effort. Here are the current open markets and guidelines, but check first, as circumstances keep changing.

Hoboken

Hoboken Farmers’ Market

The city of Hoboken will host the Hoboken Farmers’ Market, sponsored by the Quality of Life Coalition, every Tuesday from 2 to 7:30 p.m. on Garden Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. The vendors and staff have agreed to additional social distancing regulations that include increasing the space between each vendor by operating on both sides of the block (on the sidewalks along the east side of Church Square Park and the west side of Demarest School), a requirement of all staff, vendors and customers to wear gloves and face masks, and pedestrian traffic on each side of the street operating in one direction.

Uptown Farmers’ Market

The city of Hoboken, in partnership with Bijou Properties, will host the Uptown Farmers’ Market every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. under the 14th Street viaduct between Grand and Adams streets. Stony Hill Farms will be selling their Jersey Fresh produce online for delivery at the market, Hoboken Farms and Paolo’s Kitchen’s will sell locally made eats, along with Pickle-Licious and Valley Creamery’s sheep’s milk cheese.

Jersey City

Hamilton Park Farmers’ Market

The farmers’ market will open this month and runs weekly through the fall from 5 to 7 p.m. Hamilton Park, 8th Street at Jersey Avenue, is easily accessible on foot from Jersey City PATH stations located at Grove Street and Newport. The market will be a pre-purchase pick-up point only to begin. The plan is to segue into a purchase market. Because of the new safety concerns, the market will be limited to farm-only products, no food trucks or prepared foods are allowed. Two farmers will participate: Stony Hill Farms and Dutch Hill Farm. Preorder and purchase online.

HDSID Farmer’s Market

The Historic Downtown Jersey City Farmers’ Market is open Mondays from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Grove PATH Plaza, Newark Avenue and Grove Street, but will also include the “first green” area of the Newark Avenue pedestrian mall to ensure that all vendors are at least six feet apart. Customers can also shop online and pick up groceries.

Journal Square Green Market

The Journal Square Green Market at Journal Square Plaza will operate every Wednesday and Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. across from the historic Jersey Lowes Theatre next to the PATH station. Customers have to wear masks and are not allowed to touch the food. The vendors will select it for them.

Paulus Hook Farmers’ Market

The Paulus Hook market on Washington Street south of Dudley Street opened in May. Customers can verbally give their verbal shopping list to market staff to pick out but not pick their own produce, or use the market’s preorder service for easier pickup before 10 a.m. They will bring groceries to the end of Washington Street by the Korean War Memorial on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Van Vorst Park Farmers’ Market

Van Vorst Farmers’ Market, in Van Vorst Park at Montgomery and Jersey Avenue, operates on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rules include: 1. Face coverings must be worn to enter the market. 2. No dogs allowed in the market. 3. Maximum of two family members in line. 4. Enter mid-York Street, exit to Montgomery. No entry from Montgomery. 5. No access to the park from the market, and no access from the park into the market. 6. Customers may not touch food products. 7. No hand-to-hand contact. 8. Must keep six feet from other customers and vendors. 9. Please move as quickly as possible through the market.

Riverview Farmers’ Market

Riverview Farmers’ Market at Riverview-Fisk Park will be open between Ogden and Palisade from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with social distancing guidelines in place.
